Local SEO Basics: Getting Found in Your City

Simple steps to help Victoria customers find your business online.

When someone in Victoria searches "plumber near me" or "best coffee shop downtown," does your business show up? If not, you're invisible to customers who are actively looking for what you offer. Local SEO is how you fix that.

Claim Your Google Business Profile

This is the single most impactful thing you can do for local visibility - and it's free. Your Google Business Profile is what appears in the map pack when people search for local services. Make sure yours is claimed, verified, and fully filled out with accurate hours, photos, and a description of your services.

Post updates regularly. Google rewards active profiles with better visibility. Even a quick photo or a seasonal promotion once a week helps.

Use Location-Specific Keywords

Think about how your customers actually search. They don't type "web design services" - they type "web design Victoria BC" or "website designer near me." Your site content should naturally include these location-based phrases in your page titles, headings, and body text.

Don't keyword-stuff. Write naturally for humans, but make sure your city, neighbourhood, and service area are mentioned where it makes sense.

Get Reviews (and Respond to Them)

Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals. Ask happy customers to leave a Google review - most will if you make it easy. Send them a direct link right after a positive interaction.

Just as important: respond to every review, good or bad. Thank people for positive reviews. For negative ones, respond professionally and offer to make it right. Potential customers read your responses as much as the reviews themselves.

Make Sure Your Info Is Consistent Everywhere

Your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) should be identical across your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, and any other directory. Inconsistencies confuse Google and hurt your rankings. Even small differences like "St." vs "Street" can cause issues.

It's a Marathon, Not a Sprint

Local SEO isn't a one-time project. It takes consistent effort over weeks and months to build authority. But the payoff is significant: showing up when local customers are actively searching for your services is one of the highest-value marketing channels available to a small business.
