How Much Does a Website Cost in Victoria, BC?

An honest breakdown of what small businesses actually pay, and what you get at each price point.

Price tags and a laptop illustration

Every week, someone in Victoria searches "how much does a website cost" and gets wildly different answers. $500. $5,000. $50,000. All of them are technically correct, which is what makes the question nearly impossible to answer without context. This is our honest breakdown.

The Four Price Tiers

DIY website builders ($0 upfront + $25–$60/month)

Tools like Squarespace, Wix, and Shopify let you build a site yourself. The upfront cost is low, but your time is not free. If you are running a trade or service business, those hours should be billing hours, not web design lessons. DIY sites also tend to look like DIY sites, which sends its own message to potential customers.

Freelancer ($500–$2,500)

A solo developer or designer working independently. The results vary enormously. A skilled freelancer who specializes in small business websites can do excellent work in this range. The risk is that there is often no process, no discovery, no SEO strategy, and no long-term support after launch. You can get lucky, or you can end up with a site that looks decent but generates zero leads.

Boutique studio or small agency ($2,500–$5,000)

This is the sweet spot for most Victoria small businesses. You get a team, a defined process, custom design, mobile optimization, local SEO setup, and ongoing support. The site is built to convert visitors into calls, not just to look presentable. Most established businesses generating $200,000 or more annually will see a return on this investment within the first year.

Large agencies ($10,000 and up)

Appropriate for multi-location businesses, e-commerce, or companies with complex integrations. For a local trades or service business, this tier offers diminishing returns. You do not need a $30,000 website to get more plumbing calls.

What You Should Actually Expect to Pay

For most service businesses in Victoria, a professional website built by a local boutique agency will run $2,500 to $4,000 for the build. Monthly maintenance runs $75 to $150.

That covers a 5 to 8 page site with custom design, mobile-first development, click-to-call buttons, Google Business Profile optimization, contact forms, and page speed work.

Ongoing Costs to Budget For

Beyond the build, plan for the following:

  • Domain name: $15–$30/year for a .ca domain
  • Hosting: $20–$80/month depending on your traffic
  • Email: $6–$12 per mailbox per month via Google Workspace
  • Maintenance: $75–$200/month for updates, security patches, and content changes

One thing worth knowing: website build costs are generally tax-deductible in Canada. Check with your accountant, but the after-tax cost is often meaningfully lower than the sticker price.

Getting What You Pay For

A $500 website is not just a cheaper version of a $3,500 website. It is a fundamentally different product with no discovery process, no conversion strategy, no local SEO setup, and no support when something breaks. You are getting a URL and a template. That might be fine at the very start of a business. It is rarely fine once you are trying to grow.

The right question is not "what is the cheapest site I can get?" It is "what is the minimum I need to spend to actually get leads from this thing?"

For most Victoria service businesses, that number is somewhere between $2,500 and $4,000.
