An honest comparison of paid search and organic rankings, and how to decide what makes sense right now.

Every trades business owner eventually asks this question: should I be running Google Ads, or investing in SEO? The people selling each service will tell you theirs is the obvious choice. Here is the more honest answer.
Google Ads puts you at the top of search results immediately. For trades categories, Google also offers Local Services Ads, which appear above even regular Google Ads and display a "Google Guaranteed" badge. These work especially well for high-urgency services: a burst pipe or a tripped breaker is not something a homeowner shops around for over several days.
The tradeoff is cost. In competitive markets, leads from Google Ads for home services run $30 to $65 for plumbing and HVAC, and $50 to $100 or more for roofing. You pay for every click whether the person calls you or not. The moment you stop paying, the leads stop too.
SEO is the work of earning organic search rankings without paying per click. Done well, it takes 3 to 6 months to produce meaningful results. Once you are ranking, leads come at close to zero marginal cost.
The median return on investment from SEO for service businesses is around 748%, according to industry benchmarks. But that number only matters if you have the patience and runway to wait for it.
SEO also compounds in a way that ads cannot. A page that ranks well in month 6 keeps ranking in month 12 and month 24. Your paid ads reset to zero every billing cycle.
The right answer depends on one question: how urgent is your need for leads right now?
If you need the phone to ring this week, Google Ads are the correct answer. If you have a 3 to 6 month runway and want to build something that generates leads without ongoing spend, SEO is the better long-term investment.
The most effective approach for most trades businesses is to run both at the same time, intentionally. Start with a modest ad budget to keep work coming in. Invest in your website and local content simultaneously. As your organic rankings improve, scale back your ad spend. Companies that use both channels together see about 40% lower cost per lead than those relying on either one alone.
Both Google Ads and SEO are largely wasted on a website that does not convert. You can pay for traffic or earn it through rankings, but if your site is slow, hard to navigate on mobile, and lacks a clear way to contact you, those visitors leave without calling.
Before spending on ads or SEO, make sure your website is doing its job. A fast, well-built site that converts visitors into inquiries is the foundation that makes every other marketing investment work.
